New Friday Night Lights music video: Let The Sun Fall Down

Life, the Universe, Football and Everything in Dillon, Texas.

Ensemble vid. I don't think it's particularly spoilery, but it contains first season footage through Mud Bowl (1.20). Crossposted to fridaynight_tv, vidding and fnl_videos. The versions available now are slightly different than the ones originally posted, due to some small tweaks made the day after releasing it.

Basic notes/lyrics under the cut, but if you want more words and thinky-thoughts, I also wrote up an extended commentary.

Dude, finally. It took months (part of the blame for that goes to seasonal depression, though...it's not like the editing took months, once I actually felt inspired enough to start) and a rewatch of the first season and a spreadsheet to keep track of the clips (seriously! I *may* have over-clipped...), but oh happy day, it is done. I love FNL. Just thought I'd mention it. I may be a little tired and loopy.

So, for purposes of this vid, imagine that football is not just a game but an actual entity, like Dillon's fairy godmother or patron saint or something like that. She (yes, she...) wants good things for this dusty town. This is what she wants for them.

Lyrics:
Close the door and leave the world behind you
Open a window
And listen to the breeze blow through the pines
Take a deep breath
What more can you do?

Let the sun fall down
All around you
Let the night surround you
In a blanket of starlight
I'll whisper you a lullaby
Let the sun fall down

That old dark cloud acts like he knows you
Takes up too much time
Time you could be spending holding me
And he can't have you now
It's you and me here in this room

Let the sun fall down
All around you
Let the night surround you
In a blanket of starlight
I'll whisper you a lullaby
Let the sun fall down

The world will keep on turning
It'll all be there come morning
So tonight

Let the sun fall down
All around you
Let the night surround you
In a blanket of starlight
I'll whisper you a lullaby

Let the sun fall down
All around you
Let the night surround you
In a blanket of starlight
I'll whisper you a lullaby
Let sun the sun fall down

Streaming no longer available due to Stage6 shutdown :(

Hope you enjoy! I'm very grateful for any and all comments.

Oh man that was...pitch perfect? Amazing? Gorgeous? Choose one and then apply the rest along with it. Your editing KILLS me, you manage to walk that line between thematic and literal so damn well -that, and I really loved the last few moments, pairing the delicate music against the rough tumble in the mud, making their joy all the more poignant. Just. Awesome.

Did I mention that already? Ooops.

Oh, bless you. Those are all the things I wanted it to be. I originally hadn't planned to use the Mud Bowl game footage at all, because it's so visually distinctive and I was concentrating on game scenes I could mix and match in the editing (mostly home games/blue uniforms). But when I came to the last chorus, I was like, DUDE, you need ALL Mud Bowl here at the end...it's the quintessential game, the one where the whole point is to just play the game with the trappings stripped away (and the "just play" idea let me work in the neighborhood kids playing football, which I was dying to use).

To be honest? I was ready to mindlessly praise you just for using Kim Richey, but holy hell, that was good. I loved the pacing and the contrast of the rock 'em sock 'em games to the slow music, but my favorite thing was how you managed to also get across that sense of the town of Dillon as a character that the show does so well.
chasarumba From: chasarumba Date: December 10th, 2007 05:06 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thank you so very much. I'm thrilled to hear that the whole town comes across. Probably the hardest part in making that happen was letting go of a lot of individual character moments that I wanted so desperately to include...but it was for the greater good of trying to make a cohesive vid about this amazing show :)

(and Kim Richey! I've had the CD stashed away for *years*, since the song was used in Buffy S1...God, I was so happy to break it out for this.)

I went home after I dropped the kids off just so I could watch it turned WAY up. BEAUTIFUL!! I love it. And I squeed when I saw Matt's part! It was absolutely beyond beautiful!

I am so happy that you love it! Oh, Matt...*sigh* I am definitely riding a wave of FNL love right now, my only regret being the stuff I couldn't include. Because ideally? I'd wrap the whole first season up in a bow and make it all fit.
vonniek From: vonniek Date: December 10th, 2007 05:01 pm (UTC) (Link)
That's just stunning. While you can call it an ensemble vid, I feel like it's not even about the individual characters, but the entire town of Dillon and its relationship with the game, a living embodiment of all its hopes and dreams. The matching of the rough and tumble games and the slow song works terrifically. I'm sitting at my desk, getting teary. Wow.

That's such a beautiful thing to say and I couldn't be more thrilled to hear that the vid communicates such a sentiment. Now I'm all "wow" and don't have any good words left except "thank you" (very much) :)

Over via Vonnie's rec--this was great! I so loved how you drew in all the nameless extras, not just as supports for the main cast but as important in their own rights, how this wasn't only an ensemble vid but a *town* vid.
chasarumba From: chasarumba Date: December 10th, 2007 05:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks so much! I can't tell you how happy I am to hear that the whole town seems to be coming through, rather than just individual characters.

PRETTY!!!! *claps wildly like a retarded baby seal*

I like the bit with the stadium lights. Nifty.

I don't watch this show, but (just out of curiosity) where do they film it? Cuz those establishing shots of the town look too uncannily similar to where I growed up for them not to have been shot in the Panhandle.

And the wardrobe people even nailed the local poor fashion sense epidemic when they dressed the extras, too. Somebody obviously puts a lot of thought into the making of that show. ;Þ
chasarumba From: chasarumba Date: December 10th, 2007 09:39 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thank you!! Really sweet of you to have a look even though you don't watch FNL.

They film in and around the Austin area and definitely use a lot of real locations and locals as extras :)

I am in love.

With this, with you for making it...everything. I know what your goal was, and you succeeded brilliantly. I felt like I was home again.

My extended review can be found here.

Re: I am in love.

First of all, hooray! You are back! Stories and pictures forthcoming, yes?

Second...*reads post*...*wibbles a bit*

When you were here and we talked about the idea, I'm not sure how well I communicated it, given that we were DRUNK (yes, again, I am telling the internets). I hope that this is much better than that rambly explanation :) And I feel so, so honored by your lovely post. It was a vid that came out of deep love and identification with the source, which I know you share. If it captures a little piece of what the show does about that whole experience, then the vid has done what it was meant to do.

Wow--that was just incredible. I haven't even watched the show (yet--it's in the queue!), but that feeling--where everyone knows the players and lives or dies on Friday nights. I'm not at all articulate, but the pairing of images and song was very evocative.
chasarumba From: chasarumba Date: December 13th, 2007 06:26 pm (UTC) (Link)
You're plenty articulate -- thank you! It's really cool to know that it got that feeling across, even without specific knowledge of the source (yet).

I think you'll really enjoy the show once you guys get around to it. The first season is pretty close to perfect TV.

What a *beautiful* vid. I don't watch FNL but this took my breath away.

The sense of place and mood you've created and held so perfectly through the whole vid is irresistible. :}

Thank you so much! I love hearing that you enjoyed it and took something from it even without source familiarity...I had hoped to tap into the show's overarching themes and avoid making the vid too plot-specific.

This was really beautiful, chasa. I don't watch FNL nor does it seem like my type of thing, but your editing and sense of style always stands out above the rest. Lots of great movement and pretty blending throughout. You also hit on some emotional strings, such as the boy in the wheelchair (at 1:30). Don't know what's going on but it looks and feels great. Beautifully done. I enjoyed it!

How kind of you to watch/comment, Lev, even though you don't watch FNL -- thank you! I'm really happy to know that you enjoyed the editing and overall feel.

Your sense of musicality always astounds me. This vid flows so beautifully, it's like the football scenes are choreographed specifically for the music, which, wow, no mean feat. You used the handheld footage so well (I LOVE camera movement on guitars - all the movement just matched the music seamlessly) and the whole thing just feels so intensely lyrical. I love all the burning-in of the lights, and, and! Ball spinning at 0:37 is SO COOL. And I'm sorry I can't say more! Snowballed in feedback. :( But, yes, this is made of WIN. :)

And I'm sorry I can't say more! Snowballed in feedback.

Hey, don't apologize -- trust me, I'm very grateful for the comment! I'm so pleased that you enjoyed it and felt it was lyrical. That handheld footage was really a challenge...I usually construct a good bit of motion while editing, but not so much with this vid. I just tried to work with what was there (and also tried to find enough "still" moments to keep viewers from feeling seasick).

I just watched this vid for the first time and while I have never seen FNL, it doesn't keep me from being awed by your glorious editing...as I always am. The flow is magnificent...oohhhh how I love all the movement. Your imagery simply floats upon this beautiful music. I wish I could be more specific about the content, but all I can do is stand in wonder at yet another example of your artisty...it's gorgeous. Your work has no equal....and inspires me always. :)

After I watched your Tami vid I had to come check out your other FNL vid :)
And this was just as awesome. I should have know to bring my tissues!
The editing in this is flawless, the fades/transitions work wonderfuly with the song.
Really, really a stunning vid.

*breathes enormous sigh of relief* This is the Friday Night Lights vid I have been waiting for! And yeah, dummy that I am I somehow missed it for months and months... but better late than never!

Everything about it felt 'right': the tone, the pace, the way you began and ended with the shots of Dillon the town (I just adore those!)...

0.39 I adore the moment where the lyric kicks in with the zoom out from the scrum (is it called a scrum?)
0.45 and then this pass on 'you'! Eee! It is spine-tingly!
1.16 Oh Timmy!
1.35 Oh Jason!
2.09 Oh Lyla!
2.17 Oh Matt!
2.50 I love the shot of Coach leaping and then Tami screaming--two moments of extreme emotion pouring out in cathartic release.
2.57 I don't know how you did it but the transition from Matt's oustretched hand to the kids playing was just perfect. It felt flawless and built this beautiful connection between the hopes and dreams of these kids and the players they watch.
3.28 Having Coach frame the start and end works so well.

I'm off to rec this. (So belatedly! Please do not laugh!) It's made my week month!

I'm off to rec this. (So belatedly! Please do not laugh!) It's made my week month!

Are you kidding? I would only be laughing with JOY :) A rec at any time is a gift (and sometimes "belatedly" turns out to be an awesome time, like now, when any distraction from Big Time Real Life Suck is welcomed).

*breathes enormous sigh of relief* This is the Friday Night Lights vid I have been waiting for!

That makes me SO pleased! I wanted this to transcend particular storylines and be a summary of FNL's core themes...hopefully the kind of vid you can watch without a ton of show knowledge and still get a sense of the emotion and spirit that is threaded throughout FNL.

Oh! This was lovely. So evocative, so pure. I had chills racing up and down my arms as I watched it. I love FNL like I have loved few other things in my life, and to see it treated with such delicacy and care and affection makes me SOOOOOOO happy. I got choked up at the end!

I saw this recced several places, and just, wow. This vid makes me want to laugh with joy and cry like a baby, all at the same time. You really captured the it's about football but it's not really about football aspect of the whole show, along with everything about it that is sad and wonderful, and so, so achingly authentic. Beautiful job. :)
