New James Bond music video: Pour Lui - Even accountants have imagination
many of them are lovely people
New James Bond music video: Pour Lui
Pour Lui

Title: Pour Lui (download here)
Fandom: Casino Royale/Quantum of Solace (James Bond movies)
Music: Even So by Rachael Yamagata
Stats: DivX (59.6MB) and WMV (32.1MB), 3:59
You're gonna hate me when I tell you everything.

Vesper POV; a note for James. Some notes under the cut and a more detailed commentary can be found here: Pour Lui commentary

Note: Did a minor re-edit on October 6th; uploaded new DivX and WMV files. If you're not sure which version you have, the re-edit runtime is 3:59 and the original was 4:00 flat.

"He sat on the edge of his bed and gazed out of the window at the peaceful sea. Then he stared dully at the envelope. It was addressed simply in a large round hand 'Pour Lui'." -- Ian Fleming, Casino Royale

She leaves a letter for him in the novel, confessing her double agent status and the reasons behind it and so on (M's phone conversation with Bond substitutes as an explanatory device in the movie). I didn't sit down with a plan to make the movie translation of her missive, but it didn't take long to realize that the song was shaping exactly that...and when it surged onto the timeline, I also realized that, whoa, I had this one bottled-up inside and all it required was a catalyst. Sometimes you don't know until you feel it at the tips of your fingers.

(and this isn't the Bond vid that I started months ago and have mentioned countless times in my posts. I guess that one's...not happening anymore? who knows.)

You're gonna hate me when I tell you everything
You're gonna question whether you really know me at all
You will revisit every smile, and where it fit into the day
I know this is how it will play
And I try, oh I try to think of all the things
That I could do to let you know that I love you
Even so

I was not looking to do you wrong
Was not looking for a change of scenery
Don't remember where, or when, or how I did
But I'm hoping that you'll forgive me
And I try, oh I try to think of all the things
That I could do to let you know that I love you

Do you remember how we used to run in the summertime?
Do you remember how we'd run?

Oh I try, I try so very hard
And I cry, I cry so very much
For I love you like you'll never let yourself feel again
I love you like a brother and a friend
I love you with my whole heart until it bends
I love you like a lover until the end

But I'll always think of all the things you did
to let me know that you love me
But you're leaving
Even so

a;sldkjf;ladjah;lkjs = both my incomprehensible relief and the backlog of classwork I now have to do :-) Feedback is wonderful -- thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to comment.

This is so. So. Good, wow. From the beginning and the beautiful intercuts of Bond and the car, both cold and mechanical and too calculating to hear what Vesper has to say, fully. And yeah, I think I'm a little in love how well Vesper's POV seeps into this, even as we're used to this being Bond's story. Just. Damn. Lovely all around.

Thanks SO much for the comment! I love that QoS car footage...there's a great Mathis quote from the novel which refers to Bond as a "wonderful machine," and those shots are so good at communicating that notion. Really glad that you enjoyed Vesper's POV, too. It is his story, but he almost needs someone else to tell this part of it, since he's so shut down in QoS...and Vesper is the one who can say, yeah, he's broken and I'm responsible and I'm sorry.

Wow. That is gorgeous. I agree about Vesper's POV.

Thank you! The combo of the song and her POV really flipped a switch. And KABOOM -- vid!

All I know about these Bond movies comes via your vids, but Vesper seems like an intensely interesting character. You did a beautiful job of portraying her as both sympathetic and strong.

You're a star for watching and commenting even though you haven't seen these movies! I really appreciate it. And thanks for the compliments on the portrayal of Vesper -- I love her and Bond like mad and am still hoping those two crazy kids can work things out in the afterlife or something ;-)

oh, geez. it took me forever to download the codec so i could watch this vid, and let me tell you, it was worth it! A+.

the sheer emotion, the way you capture bond's veneer cracking in the QoS scenes, the way it flashes from vesper's eyes to a shot of james to vesper looking upset, oh wow. so good. so good!

[goes to download the song nao]

Hi! Whoops, I was slow on getting the Windows Media version done...sorry you had to go codec-hunting (though the DivX version is higher quality and therefore better-suited to the radiance of Vesper and Bond :-))!

Thanks so much for watching and commenting! I'm glad you felt that it was emotionally potent. It felt *very* raw to me, but I'm so far gone over these characters and know that my reaction to the footage isn't universal. Some might say "mental."

Feel free to ping me if you need help with the song -- the version in the vid is edited (I cut a piece and sped it up a smidge), but I have the original.

Thanks very much! The vids are the only vaguely healthy way I can express my mad love for that movie :-)

I'm sort of a fan of the inanimate object as a device to help tell a story (as you know!). And while I still haven't seen QoS *ducks*, I can say that I love how Vesper's necklace was like a companion, or even guide, though the story in your vid. I see someone else talked about Vesper sort of telling Bond's story...but I also kind of viewed this as the necklace telling hers.

I need to watch again for more tech-y stuff (what tech I actually get, anyway, *L*) but I am in love with the look and feel of it, and the lyric placements, and...well. Awesome!
chasarumba From: chasarumba Date: September 29th, 2009 01:56 am (UTC) (Link)
The necklace is definitely a storytelling device in QoS -- it *is* Vesper. The only other option would have been for them to insert flashbacks, and really, the necklace is more poignant. As such, that shot of it discarded in the snow KILLS me!

(also, since my own loveknot is prized, it horrifies me to see such a precious thing in the faux snow -- pick it up! put it away carefully! respect the necklace! *g*)

I'm glad you liked it :-) I basically tossed my life aside for a week and am now picking up the rubble (just spent three hours on a quiz and there's no fucking way I'll finish the homework assignment)...but it was worth it. I needed that, and I appreciate you watching and telling me what you thought of it!

Wow, it means so much to hear that I might have given you a different slant on the source -- that's awesome! Thanks bunches for both watching and taking the time to comment!

I think CR is leaps and bounds above QoS, no question...but I also felt like QoS had some of the fallout that I was hoping for, more a coda to CR than a standalone. It's grim and humorless and as far as I'm concerned, that's because it's all about Vesper; he is broken in direct proportion to how important she was. So, that's the brush with which this vid is quite liberally painted -- and I'm really glad if it brought Vesper's character out in a good way for you because I certainly adore her.

so sad and beautiful!
you reminded me, why I love the first part of the new bond movies so much!

You're just the queen of vidding James Bond, aren't you. :) Gorgeous vid as always. Very smooth, very clean. Fantastic!

*places crown on head* Ha, Queen of Fail, maybe! I really suck at all things vidding this year, but I'm glad I pushed everything aside for a week to churn this one out...still obsessed with the Bond/Vesper thing and this was very much a case of vidding-for-self-as-fannish-therapy or whatever. Thanks a bunch for watching :-)

wow, this is so gorgeous!
i'm not the biggest bond fan around (especially not the new stuff), but i really love this vid. your sense of musicality & motion is so absolutely stunning - even in this slow song here (or maybe the slowness even enhances it, i don't know) !

and... um, i hope you don't mind if i friend you :)
chasarumba From: chasarumba Date: October 7th, 2009 01:36 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thank you! I like working with songs of different tempos and seeing what I can do with what each has to offer. This one was REALLY slow -- in addition to cutting a tiny piece, I also sped it up slightly...didn't want to alter the song's essential character, but if I can shave a few seconds off and tighten the pacing a bit *without* negatively impacting the song, I'm going to do that!

and... um, i hope you don't mind if i friend you :)

Not at all! Friended you back :-)

Found out about this vid from your LJ conversation with dearshiori and what a find it is!

This is truly a masterpiece. Everything worked beautifully from the song selection (I love Rachael Yamagata like woah!) to the sequencing and cutting of scenes. Frankly, watching this made me shed tears. It made the angst and love between Vesbond (quoting you) so fresh again in my mind.

May I friend *cough*stalk*cough* you?
chasarumba From: chasarumba Date: October 7th, 2009 01:46 pm (UTC) (Link)
Thanks *so* much -- I'm really happy to know that it moved you like that! I totally cried while I edited. I have a real problem with these two, and somehow, tapping into *her* perspective via this fab song made me an emotional wreck (also, I haven't had time to vid in ages, so creative emo gets a share in the blame). And it would be lovely to be friended up with another Vesbond lover (and by the looks of your icon, an Eric fan! LOVE ERIC. read all books this summer, now kinda hate show for all the ways they are trying to infringe upon his overwhelming book!awesome...but Skarsgard is too pretty to stop watching, so I watch and bitch)!

That was beautiful - the song is perfect, but you also fit everything perfectly to the song. Like, in a way I can't describe. The cuts and everything, it just worked. Thank you!

It's a thrill to hear that it all came together in a way that really worked for you. Thank you so much for the kind feedback!

very late comment from someone who only gleaned who Vesper was from reading all the previous comments, which I agree with, every one! i'm really rusty at commenting so forgive the following incoherent attempt.....

the video is just gorgeous, the scenes so poignant and filled with regret. but your use of the music....the piano chords.....so beautiful in the cutting, so fitting in tone. I love the fast b&w cutting at 51-53; and the triplet cuts you make throughout which are just amazing (e.g. at 1.21, 1.31 and 2.58, just to take a few random examples). i mention these because i am physically unable to make cuts like these, try as I might....it's not in me. but it is clearly, and gorgeously, in you.

what a world, where a gifted musicality such as yours is made to focus on taxes....

be well, chasa!
chasarumba From: chasarumba Date: November 22nd, 2009 10:50 pm (UTC) (Link)
Awww, Blitzed, thank you so much for this comment, which was neither incoherent nor late :-) Casino Royale is a great movie, whether or not you're a fan of previous Bond films (I wasn't particularly crazy about them, but CR redefined the franchise for me). I heartily recommend it!

I'm so glad you enjoyed the vid and the musicality. This one wasn't big on effects, so the relationship with the music was all the more important. And you know, I try to keep in mind that what I do for a living need not define who I am or all the aspects of my personality (as Vesper says in Casino Royale, "Even accountants have imagination," and that's become sort of my motto)...hopefully I'll always have interests like vidding to keep me balanced!

Thanks again and you take care as well!
