New video: Ballerina Lake

Title: Ballerina Lake
Source: Womb (2010 movie starring Eva Green and Matt Smith)
Music: Ballerina Lake by Scott Matthews
File info: MP4 (download here) and streaming under cut, 4:47
He is alive and well inside her body.

If the spirit moves you, feedback is lovely.

Streaming up, which looks OKish if you watch in HD...though the download is better, of course (can you tell I'm still resistant to this streaming business?) ;-) In lieu of notes for now, if you haven't seen Womb or heard about it, here's a review that outlines the plot of this disquieting little movie. Consider that your content warning!

The boat on the lake is always frozen in time
The winter descends as she can hear motorbikes
But every time the engine always dies
As the wheels spin her tears turn to ice

He's been gone seven years but still the bike remains
Under the frost of ballerina lake
Ballerina why do you dance so sad?
You're fulfilling the dream that he never got to see you have

Awakes and sleeps only with memories
They kiss her every night on her head
Like little notes of things he said to remind her
He's alive and well inside her body
But what's a memory without a life?
It doesn't fill her empty side

In their room she'll reminisce behind a widow's gaze
Lying on the bed imagining he's awake
She's wearing his clothes scented with all their highs
As the musical box is playing ballerina chimes

The perfect end holds a place very dear by her side
The motorbike revs and she can taste the ride
Cracks appear as she pirouettes
Into the lake's tears she leapt and never came back

Awakes and sleeps only with memories
They kiss her every night on her head
Like little notes of things he said to remind her
He's alive and well inside her body
But what's a memory without a life?
It doesn't fill her empty side

So glad you enjoyed it! I spent way too much time tweaking those transitions, so it's nice to hear that they contributed something to your viewing experience :)

I do recommend the movie for anyone who doesn't mind the unsettling subject matter. It's a strange one. I don't think it's perfect by a long shot...it falls short of exploring some of the issues it raises (though reading some commentary by the director makes it clear that he was focusing on particular elements and maybe he just wasn't interested in answering so much as provoking). But it's almost hypnotic to watch and I definitely found it compelling.

Thanks so much for the kind comment!

Wow. I actually couldn't finish the vid because I became so creeped out by the narrative. So--you definitely got to me!

Yeah, I remember reading the synopsis while the movie was still in development...I think I physically recoiled! A strange movie in many ways, but interesting to vid. Thanks a bunch for giving it a whirl - hopefully no permanent damage done to your psyche ;)

That is really sweet of you -- thanks! It's a miracle I can even still operate editing software, *g*

Thank you so much for the kind comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the song choice - when that song/source combo is right, it really drives a project (real life sidetracked me so many times while working on this that I probably would have given it up if the song hadn't felt so fitting).

You always do such a great job of choosing songs for your vids that are out of the popular mainstream but always so apt. I knew neither the song nor the subject matter coming in, but nevertheless I can see that they are perfectly matched.

The segment you've capped above is the creepiest, imo, with her reading over Tommy's shoulder and nosing into his neck. Whoa!

Awesome, as always.

Thank you for giving it a watch! YouTube auto-generated the thumbnail, which almost makes it creepier...HOW DID THEY KNOW?!? LOL, it's definitely one of the most unsettling moments in a movie that has lots of creepy to choose from.

(and freezing rain here today...CAN IT BE DISNEY NOW?)

For some time I wanted to leave a few words here for this beautiful thing, but I ordered the film from amazon and assumed I would have gotten it long before now so I could watch the movie...and watch your vid again after, but alas, I see the DVD was delayed, to put it mildly, and they say it is supposed to arrive by April 16...ugh. I ordered it in February! I should have been more on top of it and tried somewhere else by now!!

I wanted to tell you how gorgeous this is and while I still haven't seen the film as I had wanted to, I am in awe at how the music choice joins your vid painting so incredibly...unsettling subject, yes...awesome vidder pulling me towards beautiful painting of such unsettling thing? yessss!

You're editing never fails to leave me.....stunnned. Magnificently stunned.

(I feel like such a dunce I didn't realize my dvd was on such a slowwwww boat, but do look forward to getting it and adding it to our list of things to talk of sooooon. Surgery scheduled, lots going on. MISS YOU! Did you watch GOT premiere btw? Again, REALLY MISS YOU!!!!)

Aw, you are so kind to leave this sweet comment! I hope your "slow boat" arrives and you get the movie soon -- it is definitely interesting and strange and (for me) oddly compelling. Thanks so much for the nice words about the song choice and editing. It was a struggle to re-learn all the technical stuff, so I'm pleased this vid got DONE and not left in my heap of abandoned projects.

Yes, we must talk soon! Drop me a message and let me know when might work for you. I have a friend coming to visit next weekend, but after that the next few weekends are free. I miss you, too, and would love to catch up!

It is a creepy film but it's nice to see a vid of it - you've capture that slow quiet sadness very well with this.
